I greet you as a representative of the ANSWER Coalition and also of Peoples Vide Network. We are a group of video activists who put out information that the corporate media will not touch. We send our videos to 50 shows around the United States every week. We also stream our videos on the internet. I want to thank the Anti-War Joint Action Committee and A-bomb Survivors Society for keeping the memory of the atom bomb holocaust alive. In our current world, run by the militarism of the U.S. Pentagon, it's vitally important to remember the destruction and heartbreak caused by the first atomic weapons of mass destruction, the U.S. atomic bombs, dropped in 1945 on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The world must remember so that it will be more difficult to repeat such horror. Remember so that the so-called endless war created by the Bush administration will end...Remember so that the troops can come home. Remember so that no more troops will be sent to occupy Iraq or the Philippines or Afghanistan or Korea or any other nation. Today the U.S. military maintains a brutal occupation of Iraq. The corporate mass media pretends that the U.S. troops are in Iraq to liberate the Iraqis. The fierce resistance of the Iraqi people to this occupation exposes the media lies. The U.S. corporate media say that more than one U.S. soldier a day has been killed since George Bush declared the Iraq war ended. The U.S. media is suppressing the truth about that. Many more have been wounded and killed. They are afraid to tell the real truth. The media also tries to hide the fact that every U.S. soldier in Iraq and every Iraqi civilian has been exposed to massive amounts of depleted uranium. Depleted Uranium coats the hundreds of thousands of bullets and missiles used in Iraq. It burns on impact. That burning creates fine particles of uranium dioxide. The particles are breathed in by the GIs as well as the Iraqis. It is in the soil, the air, the water. No one is immune. Also, the effects of depleted uranium will be felt over generations, just as the victims of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings have suffered over generations. The majority of the people of the United States, poor and working people, oppressed and marginalized people, are struggling against militarism. They don't want their sons and daughters to be killed or maimed in a war that only benefits the rich. They don't want their sons and daughters to be the oppressors in an occupying army. We saw that this was true when the wives and mothers of US GIs held an angry protest. They demanded the army to bring their sons and husbands home. This happened in Ft. Stewart at a large army base. The wives and mothers even refused to let a general leave the base, until he agreed to their demands. The soldiers of the U.S. are a product of an economic draft. They are mostly poor and oppressed youth with no hope for education or employment. Many times their choice is between prison and the military. They have been told that they will get an education in the army. That is a lie told in endless advertisements on television. It is a lie told by recruiting officers who come into the schools and the homes of young people who believe their lies until too late. Now, a new law passed after 9/11 requires the schools to give out the names of all students eligible for the draft to the military even if their parents object. We believe that it is possible for these soldiers to be part of the anti-war movement. We have seen that the troops in Iraq are now saying; "We want to go home!". The Iraqi resistance is a real problem for the U.S. occupation. But now, the GI resistance is also beginning to be a problem for the U.S. occupation. That's why the government in Washington is looking for others around the world to take some of the casualties. They want other troops to die. We saw the U.S. militarists allowed Japanese government to send troops to Iraq since Japanese parliament voted 126 to 102 to send 1000 armed troops. We are pleased to see that right after vote the Japanese people demonstrated against it. We are in solidarity with the Japanese people who are resisting this renewed militarism. Before, the U.S. didn't want to share but now that they have trouble they're looking for allies. Koizumi insists that the soldiers will only be engaged in non- combat activities in so-called safe areas. But the growing Iraqi resistance to colonial occupation is making it clear that there is no safe area for armies of conquest. And U.S. officials have also made it clear that they want their allies to carry arms and ammunition... Tokyo is not the only imperial power considering such a move. Right after Japan decided to send troops the German and French governments started talking about doing the same thing. The Japanese troops who go to Iraq will face the same exposure to depleted uranium and the same hatred from the occupied people of Iraq who are more and more organized to get the troops out of their country. It is up to us, the common people of the world to struggle against this rising tide of militarism and to demand that they be sent home. Just as the people of Japan are struggling for peace, millions of people in the United States are doing the same thing. In the United States progressive organizations have formed a coalition to fight the war machine. It is called ANSWER. ANSWER, in English stands for Act Now to Stop War and End Racism. Shortly after September 11, the International Action Center, along with other progressive national organizations decided to unite. The ANSWER groups include those fighting United States militarism and intervention in Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East and Asia. ANSWER also includes organizations that work towards social and economic justice and civil rights for people inside the US. ANSWER wanted to respond to the headlong rush to war of the Bush Administration and the racist attacks against Arab and Muslim Communities in the wake of the 9/11 destruction of the World Trade Center. ANSWER organized the first national demonstration against war and racism less than 2 weeks after 9/11, on September 29, 2001. Despite warnings that we were too close to the tragedy and should not march, tens of thousands marched in Washington DC and San Francisco to say that war is not the answer. But the movement against the war in Iraq is a global phenomenon. ANSWER helped organize the first global day of action against the war in Iraq on January 18, 2003. Half a million marched in Washington DC along with many millions of people around the world in a thousand cities. We continued to organize mass demonstrations in February and March and began the campaign against U.S. occupation of Iraq in April, 2003. Now the challenge is to end occupation. Once again, on October 25 in Washington DC and other cities in the U.S., we will go into the streets to demonstrate against the occupation. Anti-war, civil rights and social justice groups along with family members of military personnel and U.S. veterans can create the effective political force that can end the occupation of Iraq and bring the troops home immediately. It was only the people's movement that ended the invasion and occupation of Vietnam. It will be the global people's anti-war movement that will help end U.S. militarism in Iraq, in Okinawa, in Korea and around the world. Dr. Janet Mayes Dr. Janet Mayes is a staff member of the International Action Center (IAC) and an activist in the International A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition. She is the website developer and manager for the IAC, Peoples Video Network, and ActivistNews.org. She studied tympani and percussion at the Juilliard School of Music, and for fifteen years performed and toured internationally with a New York City based political theatre company; she was also the Director of Publicity and Audience Development for that company. She holds a Master of Arts in English Literature and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. She also taught and directed programs in various universities, and is the author of a college text book. A psychologist/psychotherapist in private practice, Dr. Mayes now works with indigent abused children and troubled adults. Greetings and solidarity from the International Action Center and the International A.N.S.W.E.R Coalition. International Action Center was founded by Ramsey Clark, former United States Attorney General. It is dedicated to information, activism, and resistance to U.S. militarism, war, and corporate greed. It links those struggles with struggles against racism and oppression within the United States. It is a major leader in the growing anti-war, anti-imperialist movement in the United States. On September 11 and in the days that followed, streets outside our downtown IAC office were filled with smoke and dust from the attack. We lost loved ones who worked in the twin towers or who rushed to the site as emergency volunteers.

war in Afghanistan. We were horrified, but not surprised as the Bush
administration used the
horrendous attack on the World Trade Center as a pretext. The rapid rush to
war and repression,
we felt, was already on its agenda long before September 11: By the end of the first week after September 11, there were hundreds, probably thousands of attacks against people of Middle Eastern descent. People were violently attacked in the streets. Over 1000 people were arrested and then denied lawyers. In response, the IAC helped form a new coalition, called A.N.S.W.E.R. which stands for Act Now to Stop War & End Racism. The United States media propaganda called for war. But people welcomed the new A.N.S.W.E.R coalition. It was joined by over 500 organizations and prominent individuals from all over the United States and the world. On September 29th, tens of thousands of people across the United States were in the streets demanding no war in Afghanistan or the Middle East. In the following months and years, the American anti-war, anti-imperialist movement was joined by hundreds of thousands and then millions worldwide. Calling for no war in Iraq. Along with its junior partner, Tony Blair, the Bush administration continues to plan for wars: Who is next? /Iran? The Democratic People's Republic of Korea? the Sudan? Cuba? We are not discouraged. Never were we discouraged. As anti-imperialists in the country that calls for "endless war", we understand that the majority of people--workers, students, the homeless and disenfranchised, people of color, repressed peoples of the world--that people in the streets are extremely powerfu1. The people in the streets are more powerful than sophisticated war technology. It is in this context that the International Action Center and International A.N. S.W.E.R. bring greetings and solidarity to the peace-loving people of Japan. We join in solidarity with families and descendents of victims in Hiroshima and Nagasaki--who know more than any others about United States' Weapons of Mass Deestruction. You have made sure the world does not forget the horrors of nuclear bombs. You work to save the planet. We thank you and we join you in that struggle. We come to build solidarity between Japanese and U.S. workers and anti-war forces. The war machine in the United States attacks the working and disenfranchised classes. The Pentagon's war on Iraq will cost over $200 billion. Long-term occupation is estimated at $1 trillion. Over 25 percent U.S. children live in poverty. In New York City over one and a half million people depend on charity to eat. Some 45 million people are without health insurance. As corporate power recolonizes whole sections of the globe, income in the U.S. steadily declines. Real income has declined every year for the past 20 years for 80 percent of the population. For every dollar devoted to its war, a baby in the United States goes without proper medical care, a child is without proper education, and a family sleeps another night hungry and without housing. Poverty forces working class youth into the military to die in wars that caused their poverty. The Japanese government has authorized soldiers to deployment in Iraq, although the majority of the population objects. Remilitarization is in violation of Japan's pacifist constitution. We stand in solidarity with Japanese workers who understand how harmful militarism is to their class. We stand in solidarity with those in Japan who oppose Japanese remilitarization and the dangers it poses for all of Asia. Ever since the United States government dropped its weapons of mass destruction on the people of Japan, it has never stopped developing weapons of mass destruction. The most recent developments are chronicled in the IAC book Depleted Uranium: Metal of Dishonor, and in the Peoples Video Network video of the same name. The United States military used depleted uranium weapons in the 1991 Gulf War. Thousands of Iraqi soldiers and citizens and their children and American soldiers and their children died or are dying of "Gulf War Syndrome." Scientists, physicians, and veterans have been documenting the deadly effects of DU weapons for over ten years. The mainstream media just recently began discussing connections between DU and Gulf War Syndrome. Let us stop a moment and note the obvious hypocrisy of the United States government! The US is the leading developer of WMD! It was the first nation in the world to deploy WMD. And it continues to do so. The United States doesn't only use obvious WMD. It also uses the less obvious version: Sanctions. Before the recent invasion of Iraq, over a million Iraqi children died from U.S. sanctions. (Secretary of State in the Clinton Administration, Madeline Albright, said the deaths were "worth it"-I am quoting her!). Now with United States occupation, conditions are even worse. (before sanctions, Iraq was a leader in medicine and technology in the Middle East) The U.S. administration is not only planning war in the Middle East, We are concerned about the current danger Of a manipulated war against the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea. The entire East Asian region is again threatened with neo-colonial maneuvering. We are in solidarity with the Korean people (in the North and South) who fight against imperialism. The DPRK has the right to defend itself against the United States. Along with Iran and Iraq, Bush accused it of being part of an "axis ofevi1." We are in solidarity with the anti-war and anti-imperialist movement in Japan, which struggles to prevent its government from repeating the history of Japanese and American colonialism in Korea. Many many people who perished in the atomic attacks on Japan were Korean. We come here, also, therefore, in solidarity with Koreans as we commemorate those fateful days fifty-eight years ago. We are solidarity with people around the world struggling against United States military occupation in more than 100 countries. We are solidarity with the struggle to rid Okinawa of American military. In particular, we are in solidarity with young women who are victims of military occupation on the shores of Japan. I was a young child when l become conscious of nuclear horror. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are my earliest memories. Coming of age in the 1960's I participated in the development of the anti-war, anti-imperialist movement in the United States. The movement has never stopped. It took years to develop the anti-war movement in the sixties against the war in Vietnam. It took a few weeks to bring thousands upon thousands of people into the streets against war after September 11. Thanks to the consciousness raising during the decades leading up to the new millennium. And thanks to the internet. The internet was developed as a military communications network. Like other imperialist technology, it is now used by the people to fight back. The internet is a powerful organizing and information tool in the popular movement. Giving a voice to the voiceless. Bringing their voices to the streets. Even though we live in the worst imperialist country in the world, we are extremely optimistic that the power of truth through information gives us more power day by day. We are encouraged and sometimes surprised at the hundreds of thousands of American people who rally in the streets against war and imperialism. Last winter The New York Times said the people demonstrating against war and oppression in the streets have become a "super power" Because of the internet, Bush and his fiends, cannot go anywhere without demonstrators getting in their way. People in the streets demonstrating against the administrations' policies forced Bush to cancel appearances He must hold speeches in well-guarded areas, such as military bases. Bush and Blair had to make their war plans for Iraq on an Azores island in the eastern-Atlantic where no anti-war forces could approach its shores. That is the power of the people. The power of the internet. Our movement grows every day. International A.N.S.W.E.R. has called for an international day of protest against War and Racism for October 25th. Within hours of issuing its call, hundreds of organizations and individuals endorsed. In the United States, the rally and march will be held in Washington D.C. Organizations in cities around the world are planning simultaneous demonstrations for that day. We invite you to join us on that day with a demonstration in Hiroshima. So, in Closing, whatever setbacks we endure, We look forward to the peoples movement in Japan and the United States and throughout the world to put up resistance to all the war plans. ビキニ水爆実験被爆者 第五福竜丸元乗組員 大石又七
私は、一九五四年三月一日に、アメリカ軍がマーシャル諸鳥のビキニ環礁で行った 水爆実験に遭遇し被爆した、第五福竜九の元乗組員で大石又七といいます。プラボー と名づけられたこの水爆は、広島型原爆の一〇〇〇倍といわれ、この地球上には存在 しない汚い放射能「ウラン二三七」を大量に作り出し、大気圏や太平洋に撒き散らし ました。これは二〇世紀最大の地球環境汚染といわれています。 第五福竜丸はそのとき、爆心地から一六〇キロ離れたところでマグロ漁をしてい て、光や音を聞き、二時間ぐらいすると真っ白な灰がたくさん降ってきて足跡がつく ほど船の上につもりました。後にこの灰は「死の灰」といわれ、強力な放射能（広島 原爆の八〇〇メートル以内の放射線量）と、アメリカの最高軍事機密である水素爆弾 の構造も含まれていました。 核実験で被爆した船は、福竜丸だけではありません。当時マーシャル海域には、九 〇〇隻に及ぶマグロ漁船が漁をしていて、二万人近くが被爆しています。しかし、政 府は汚染したマグロだけ調べ、人間のほうは．さわらぬ神にたたりなしとでもいうか のように調べようとしませんでした。 私たち第五福竜丸の乗組員は二三人ですが、これまでにガンや肝機能障害という共 通した発病で半数の十二人が亡くなっています。そのたびに家の柱を失った家族の嘆 きや、生活苦を見つづけてきました。 私も何じように肝臓ガンになり、手術しています。そして、最初の子どもは死産、 それも奇形児という悲しい姿でした。しかし日本の政府は、「被爆とは関保ない」と いって認めていません。 このビキニ事件は、発生直後から強力な核実験反対運動にあい、あわてて政府は日 米友好に邪魔、核実験続行にも邪魔、とわずか九カ月で、被災者の頭越しに政治決者 を結び、すべてを解決済みにしてしまいました。私たちもその時点から被爆者ではな くなりました。 どうしてそんなに急いだのか、その理由は後に発表された外交文書や、残されてい る資料の中から見えてきました。 日米政府は、水面下で事件の最中に、大変な外交取引をしていたのです。 当時アメリカは、濃縮ウランや原子力技術を外交カードとして西側同盟を勢力下に おき、軍事ブロックを作ろうとしていました。そして日本に受け入れを打診してきて いました。日本政府も、原子炉や原子力技術をアメリカから得ようとしていた矢先で す。そのため、アメリカが行う核実験には協力する、国際法にも違反しない。などと いい、漁業関係などが被つていた膨大な損害や補償も、わずかな見舞金でいい、と国 民の願いとはまったく逆な、とんでもないことをいって取引を行ったのです。日本の 原子力発電はビキニ事件の被害額と引き替えに山来上がったも同然で、私たちはその ための人柱にされたのです。それらの事実は、事件から三十数年たつてようやく残さ れている資料の中から浮かび上がり、これまでの認識とはまったく違ったビキニ事件 が見えてきました。 そしてあと一つは、福竜丸乗組員の相次ぐ発病し対し、厚生省は被爆四十六年目に して初めて「発病は被爆と関係がある」と、ほんの一部だけ認め、船員保険法を適用 しました。関係があったのです。この間に十一人が同じ病気で亡くなっているので す。しかし、この人たちの扱いは、まったく無視されたままです。この事件には隠さ れた部分がまだまだたくさんあります。 ビキニ事件はまだ終わっていません。 わたしは咋年、核実験場となったマーシャル諸島を訪問して、たくさんのことを知 ることができました。ビキニやロンゲラップの島民はいまだに流民生活を送っていま す。そして政府は、五〇年を過ぎた今も、加害国アメリカに補償要求を続けていま す。 驚いたのは、私たちと同じ水爆で被爆した島民たちが三十五種類の病気が認めら れ、アメリカからの補償金で保護されていました。この違いは一体何んでしょう。 しかしアメリカ政府も、この先は補償額を減らすとか、打ち切るとか、そんな話も 聞きました。 被爆者に対する日米政府の、このような態度を許すわけには行きません。 私はこれら新しい事実をしらべ、被爆当事者の目をとおして事件の全体像を「ビキニ 事件の真実」という本にまとめて、この度みすず書房から出版しました。ビキニ事件 五〇年間の知られていない新しい記録です。ぜひ皆さんにも目を通していただきたい と思っています。 私はこの半世紀、アメリカの水爆実験のために人生を変えられ、苦しんできまし た。そしてこの恐ろしい核兵器のことを考えつづけてきました。核兵器をこの地球上 から無くすためにはどうしたらいいのだろう。そんなことをずつと考えつづけてきま した。 広島・長崎に原爆が落とされて五十八年、核兵器は人類の敵として、反対運動が続 けられてきたのに、無くなるどころかますます作られ、各国もかけ引きの道具とし て、指導者たちがもてあそんでいます．しかし、知らぬ間に核兵器の方がすでに人間 を支配しています。 私は今、こんなことを真剣に考えるようになりました。夢のような理想で、現実味 がない、と笑われるかもしれませんが、私は真剣です。「今、世界中に配備されてい る二万発の核兵器に人類が襲われ、地球は廃墟と化した。人類は核兵器に無条件降 伏。そう思おう」。 日本はかつて世界を相手に太平洋戦争を起こしました。敗戦で国は廃墟と化し、憲 法で戦争を放棄し軍隊を無くしました。そのおかげで経済大国を築き、世界にも貢献 することができました。 戦国時代の日本を治めた幕末には、廃藩置県で武士（軍隊）を無くし、国を統一し たこともあります。戦争の絶えない世界も今、このときと同じように各国は軍隊を無 くし、国連攻府、地球防衛軍に統一するときが来ていると思います。 各国には警察と災害救助隊があれば十分。戦争や軍隊が浪費する膨大なお金を、世 界の「貧困や、教育、友好」に使えば世界はかわります。時間はかかるかもしれませ んが、古い常識もかえていくことができると思います。 コンピユーターで世界がつながり、地球の裏側まで瞬時に分かる地球一国の時代に なってきました。人類は今、大きく進化するときではないでしょうか。特に言いたい のは、固定観念でかたまっている大人にではなく、頭のやわらかい時代を担う若者た ちに託していさたいと思い、私は学校などで少しづつ話しています。 「そんなことが出来る訳がない」といって核兵器や軍備を増強したり、有事、有事 とあおり立てて、弱いものいじめのような戦乱を繰り返していたら、やがて核兵器や 原子力発電所を狙った自爆テロ（特攻隊〉の反撃で、あるいは早いうちに人類の危機 がくるかもしれません。死を選ぶか、生きることを選ぶかは指導者ではなく、私たち 一人一人の行動だと思います。 古い常識が簡単にかわるとは思いません。しかし、一人が二人、二人が四人とコン ピユーターを生かして世界に輪をひろげていったら、意外性が生れ、つながっていく かも知れません。 １００年かかっても、２００年かかっても、地を這うようにして下から変えていきた いです。敵は外にではなく自分の中にいます。仲良くしようと自分が努力すれば相手 も友人になります。かけがえのない地球と人類を、みんなで考え、守りましょう 。 ２００３年８月 ヒロシマ反戦反核の集い ページのtopへ |
A hibakusha- hydrogen bomb survivor of Bikini An ex-member of the crew of the Daigo Hukuryu maru " The Lucky Dragon V" Ohishi Matashiti I was a fisherman. I encountered and was exposed with the US hydrogen bomb test on the Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands March 1 1954. The hydrogen bomb, code named Bravo, equivalent to 1000 times the destructive force of the Hiroshima atomic bomb spread out the dirtiest radioactivity " uranium 237", which does not exist in nature, in the air on the Pacific Ocean. It was the most lethal environmental contamination of the 20th century. When we noticed the bright light and heard the explosive sound we were operating the tuna fishing on the Lucky Dragon far 160km from the explosion center. Two hours later, white ash began to fall and ash left on the deck was thick enough to make our footprints. The ash, called "the dead ash" contained the high powered radioactivity equivalent to that of Hiroshima atomic bomb under 800m from explosion center and the fragment of the hydrogen bomb which had been kept as the top secret of US military. There were other fishing boats exposed with the nuclear test. Nearly 20000 fishermen on 900 tuna fishing boats were operating in the Marshall sea area. Japan's government inspected, likely to let sleeping dogs lie, only contaminated tunas but the members of crew on the boats. 12 of 23 members of the crew have suffered from cancer or liver dysfunction as common disease and died. I have encountered the grief and hardships of life of the family. I, too, suffered from the liver cancer and had operations. My first baby was born with birth defect and dead. But Japan's government has not recognized the relation between the disease and the exposure to radiation. Short after breaking out, the Bikini incident awoke the wide movement against the nuclear test. Japan's government, assuming that the incident would obstruct the friendly relationship between Japan and the US and the proceedings of the nuclear test, brought the issue to an end politically in a mere nine months over sufferers' head. Since then we have not been nuclear bomb survivors. The reason why the government so hurried has been found in the diplomatic documents and written materials. Both governments reached a compromise without informing the public in the middle of the incident. US government sought to form the military block to establish its influence on the western alliance with offering the concentrated uranium or the nuclear engineering as a diplomatic card. US government asked for Japan's acceptance. It was just when Japan wanted to get a nuclear reactor and the nuclear engineering from US. Therefore, Japan's government declared to cooperate with US's nuclear test making an excuse the Bikini incident did not violate the international law. Japan's government bargained away, on the contrary of public desire, the vast amount of the compensation for the fishing industry in exchange for small money in token of US's sympathy. Nuclear power stations in Japan have been built with the amount of compensation. We were forced to be sacrifice for them. These facts, at long last, found in the remained materials thirty several years after the incident made us recognize "another Bikini incident". Health and Wealth Ministry applied the Shipmen's Social Insurance to the hibakushas 46 years after the incident recognizing partially the relation between the exposure and the decease because the outbreak of hibakushas' illness had succeeded one another. Indeed, there was the relation between them. Although twelve hibakushas had been dead in the same decease since the incident, they are kept ignored. Most of the incident is hidden. When I visited Marshall Island last year, the testing ground of the nuclear weapons, I learned more. People of Bikini and Rongelap islands are still living in wandering. The government has demanded the reparation to US for its perpetration for fifty years. I was surprised to know that the islanders exposed with the same hydrogen bomb were compensated by US government which had recognized 35 kind of decease as a result of the exposure. What is the difference? But, I also heard the US government would stop the compensation or reduce the amount of it. I never forgive the way of Japan's and US government dealing with the hibakushas. After I have studied these new facts through eyes of a person concerned I presented an overall picture of the incident in "The truth of the Bikini incident" just published from Misuzu Shobo. This book is new documents of the Bikini incident unknown for fifty years. I recommend you to read it. For half a century I have been distressed, forced to change the way of my life by the US hydrogen bomb test. And I have been thinking of the terrible nuclear weapons, how could I eliminate them. Fifty-eight years have passed since the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Unless the movement against the nuclear weapons as an enemy of human beings has been carried out, they had been made more and more far from eliminated. Leaders of each country use them as the way of bargaining. The nuclear weapons have controlled human beings without our knowledge. Now I come to consider such a thing seriously. You might laugh at me because I am dreaming of an ideal and lack the favor of reality. No, I am serious. "20000 of nuclear weapons distributed all over the world attacked human beings, then the earth fell into ruin. Human beings unconditionally surrendered to nuclear weapons. I think so." Japan once caused war against the world. The country fell into ruin. The Constitution renounced war and abandoned troop. Owing to it, Japan became an economic superpower and could contribute to the world. In the last days of Tokugawa regime (Bakumatsu) Japan abandoned samurai and united the countries with the abolition of the feudal domains and establishment of prefectures. Today, wars take place continually all over the world, I think the time has come when every country should be united to the UN government and the Earth defense force as well as Bakumatsu. It is enough for each country to have only police and disaster relief squad. The world could be changed if an enormous amount of money wasted in a war and a military would be used for getting rid of poverty, education and friendship. We could also change our old common sense though it would take a little time. If we build up the nuclear weapons and arms or repeat wars like bullying the weak, stirring up a sense of urgent, we might soon face a crisis of human beings caused by suicide bombers (kamikaze) attacking on the nuclear weapons or the nuclear power stations. People who could choose dead or alive are not leader but each of us. The world connected by computers has become to one country knowing what is happening on the other side at once. I think it is now when human beings have a big step of evolution. I would like to leave my hope to young people who will lead the next generation with flexible thinking but grown up people with fixed ideas. Therefore, I am giving a talk to students at school little by little. I think it is not easy to change the old common sense. If we can extend our world on computer network, there will be an unexpected world. Although it might take one hundred or two hundred years I would like to change the world from the bottom crawling on the ground. The enemy exists inside of us. 「核兵器の恐ろしさを誰かが言わなければ、いつかきっと大変なことが起こる。それを知っているのは被害を受けた当事者、死の恐怖を身をもって休験してきた俺たち自身ではないのか。そんなふうに少しずつ思うようになっていた。」１９５４年３月１日、太平洋ビキ二環礁近くでマグロ漁をしていた第五福竜丸の乗組員は見たことのない光と音を目撃、その後、被らに白い粉が降りかかってきた。それは広島型原爆の千倍の威刀をもつ水爆の爆発でできた死の灰だった。世界を震撼させたビキニ事件は、こうして姶まる。放射能雨、原爆マグロ、被爆した２３人の乗組員のひとり、久保山愛吉さんの死。原水爆禁止運動は日本から世界中に広まっていった。
しかし、冷戦の力学の中、日本政府はアメリカ政府との間で２００万ドルの見舞金と原子力技術の供与という政治決着を行い、わずか９か月で事件に蓋をする。被爆した乗組員の補償は何らなく、被らは障害を抱えたまま、事件は忘れ去られていった。
第五福竜丸の乗組員であった著者は、長年、被爆者であることを隠し通してきた。しかし１９８３年、著者は体験を語り始める。小中学校で、高校で、今国各地で。あれから５０年、証言や資料なども駆使しつつ、ここにビキニ事件の真実が初めて明らかになる。核廃絶の思いとともにおくる衝撃作。
