The Touhou Koumarou convention with words this time
Osaka doesn't seem to have many doujin fan conventions. Oh sure, there's flyers at the shop, but they always seem to advertise stuff going down in Tokyo. I'm really missing out on the goods by being in the Kinki region.
So I wasn't expecting much from the Touhou Kouroumu (東方紅楼夢) convention I went to, which was one week before that Tokyo Game Show 2005. That's why I arrived late. But I was pleasantly surprised. (So was my wallet, actually.) Since I arrived late, I didn't get any of the good doujinshi fan comics. I noticed the some of the guys were overloaded with paper. I bet those otaku can bench pretty good, they just don't know it. There were about a hundred or more circles, some selling music, some selling goods, but most of it was doujinshi, so there wasn't much selection to begin with.
One of the problems with the place though is that it was hot and not well ventilated. Actually that's putting it mildly. It was so hot and humid that the floors were slick with moisture! Ick. The convention holders were blasting PAs to "mind your step" for your safety. There wasn't enough room for the hundreds of attendies to be courteous to each other. Bump, bump, bump like a pinball into another sweaty guy. Yuk. I was sweaty myself. Yuk ick. Ah it takes courage to face the summer crowds. Be brave. Another problem was that I couldn't find the place to begin with. The building was a dilapidated department store/mall with its own shuttle service to and from the train station. But there weren't any signs. I was walking around the first floor trying to figure out how to get to the 5th floor. I just locked on a bunch of young guys who looked like they were crusin' for a doujin brusin'.
I'll show the haul again:

Starting with the top picture: You had to have a catalog (top center) to get in. I discussed the cover artwork previously. I saw that Master Burner, that Touhou-flavored Afterburner II look-a-like PC game there. It's by DNA Software Creators, the same people who brought us that Moedan tutorial shmup, which I reviewed in March. On the top left is simply a laminated paper with Reimu zipping past with cards. There were various designs but the drawing style left a lot to be desired. Only 200 yen for one sheet. Lastly, the bottom are iron-on printed characters on thin cloth bags. The drawing style is very cute. I don't remember why that middle bunny ear'd character is related to the Touhou universe. To me she seems out of place. Am I lacking the Touhou-ness? In any case, check out Reimu on the far right jealously guarding her sake with a mischievious grin. Great.

I tried to find the card set that went with that excellent Touhou Radio binder, but sadly the Touhou Radio goods didn't make it. I had to settle for some other circle's card set. Not too bad, but it's a regular trump set, not some wierd card game you young people play nowadays (wozzat?! Magic the Gardening? Get off my lawn pesky kids.) That's the cards and booklets on the bottom half. The top half is some doujinshi that I just had to have. Great cover art and works by Milk Bar and Hiro Shinogane. I don't really dig the chicks + swords formula, just to let you know.
Would I go again? Yeah, and I would concentrate on the CD audio stuff and CG collections. But I'd bring a bandanna or a face mask or something.
