Three Kuijken Brothers meet at the Fukuoka Festival !

Three Kijken Brothers, Wieland, Sigiswald, and Barthold (from left to right)

We are lucky enough to have all 3 of Kuijken brothers, the first time in Fukuoka Early Music Festival. Born in Belgium, each of them seeked early music performance style for gamba, violin and flute single-handed in their young days as a pioneer. From the dawning of early music, with Gustav Leonhalt and France Bruggen, they have achieved a lot of great work in playing as well as in recording and they are now still active at the forefront as the most valuable asset in early music world. In particular, Sigiswald, a new guest to our festival, has been a conductor as well as a violinist of La Putite Band and has led early music world energetically for a long time as a pioneer to create his original musical field. Almost every Japanese early music players who studied in Holland, has been under the care of Kuijken brothers. Not only as musician but also as teacher, they are popular and highly respected for their deep insight and broad-mindedness.

At the Grand Concert on 12 and 13 Sept., main members from La Petite Bande and Japanese leading early music players will play a complete set of J.S.Bach's Orchestral Suites and Brandenburg concertos. According to Sigiswald Kuijken's concept, they play music in small ensemble with string part by single player with superior ability. Except for some part of the Suite, violonecello da spalla, restored from Bach's days, will be played in stead of cello at this festival. You can see this instrument in the picture above, played by Sigiswald.
