ことを書いていました;

APQ100/640にZeiss monocentric10mm+TV 5Xpowermate

します;

A History of the Amateur Refractor -Part II Zeiss

A History of the Amateur Refractor -Part II Zeiss Dave Novoselsky 08/22/08

The German optic industry has a long, and well-justified reputation for skill, innovation,
and perfection of design and production of carefully crafted high end products. I have an
interest in rangefinder cameras as well as other hobbies. In cameras and camera lenses,
the names Lecia and Zeiss stand out above most others. Interestingly enough, and germane
to the present discussion, those companies were the inspiration for and 'copied' and then
matched and sometimes 'bettered' by several Japanese optic firms, including Canon, Nikon,
Pentax and others. And, as with Zeiss, several of these Japanese companies also developed
superb optics intended for amateur astronomers, following the lead of Zeiss.
In the years after WWI, Zeiss introduced a growing line of amateur otpics, lens cells and
complete telescopes, for the amateur market. Originally high end achros, very much in the
Clark mode, using its own research in the development of optics for the scientific and
government markets, Zeiss introduced the first APOs to be commercially available in any
'production series.' Today, these can still be found, albeit rarely and at a VERY high price,
as the ZEISS APQ series.
The APQs were flourite triplets built to the very highest standards. (Zeiss built superb
doublets as well.) Using what was then the most advanced scientific testing methods, each
optic was rigorously tested before release.
Indeed, QC was maintained at the very highest level. Tom Back told me a story he had heard
from a long-time Zeiss employee that each APQ was given its final test by a senior optician
who took every scope out to check its performance on the skies. If the optic did not meet
his standards, regardless of preliminary test reports, it would rejected in the most emphatic
manner as he would put it on a bench and smash it with a hammer! Zeiss would not take the
chance of having a single sub-standard optic with its name on it leave the factory. (I have
heard this same story from others, so it would seem to be true.)
The APQ series was capped by the 150. This largest of all the Zeiss apos, if it appears on
the market today, commands a healthy five figure price tag and even then rarely lasts on
the market for more than a day. I looked through one at a star party. It lived up to its billing,
although today's high end refractors will outperform it.
The APQ is the ancestor of all of todays APOs. Several current designers trained in the
Zeiss "school" with Roland at AP building upon this heritage, both as to design and emphasis
on the highest possible standards of optic performance and rigid quality control. These same
principles found there way into our next section, the early Japanese APOs.

Porrima Pursuit PJ Anway
I was able to get outside for the first time with my new Cambridge Atlas last night.
It is really nice and easy to use. In a couple of hours, which included several looks at
Saturn, I was able to locate and observe 17 double stars from Mullaney's 133 "showpieces".

One of the targets was Gamma Virginis, better known as Porrima. I was using my Zeiss
80mm f10.5 apo and 4mm ortho yielding 210X. With that setup, I could notice an elongation
in the star. To help verify it, I switched back and forth between gamma and epsilon (which
have very close magnitudes) and there was certainly a difference in appearance. I couldn't
find the current separation for Porrima, but using Richard Dibon-Smith's orbit diagram,
I estimated it to be about 1.5" at present. With the seeing being excellent, the component
magnitudes being equal and with the resolution limit of an 80mm being 1.73" (Raleigh) and
1.47 (Dawes), I would think that an 80mm could show elongation at that separation. What do
you think? I would interested in your observations. Also, does anyone know the current
separation?

According the orbit, the separation is growing relatively fast and should soon (a year or so)
be an easy target for a 3-inch. However, in the meantime, it makes a nice challenging object
for a small refractor.

PJ,
this is a bit dated already, but similar to your observation
TMB SS cf80 Apo

Saturn observed at 100x 167x and 250x. Not much loss of detail at 250x, but best view
was at 167x. Used 5mm TMB planetary and 7.5mm Tak LE and 2.5x Powermate. Banding
on disk, rings in front of disk, and shadows seen, but only the faintest hint of Cassini.
Saturn creamy yellow with dark tan streaks/bands and darker shades at ring shadow.
Porrima at 167x no elongation noticed, but at 250x, could just see the disk was not round.
It appeared slightly oblong oriented at about 45。 to the plane of drift. The tiny disk
appeared like a very small planet.
I think sep is just over 1 arcsec, but not sure.

This only brings us to Jan 2009 but seems it might agree
a more complete ephemeris calculated by Brian Skiff
add three more 10ths of a year in this sequence to get to mid April and
you would get about 1.23 to 1.25"

When I observed it last May is was about 1 arcsec.

Re: Porrima Pursuit [Re: PJ Anway] fred1871
The comments above reminded me I'd looked at Gamma Virginis recently (March 23 this
year) with my 5.5" refractor (Vixen NA140SS) - at 133x I saw an elongated image, at
200x two discs almost touching, at 320x the two discs showed slight separation. So
it's still a tight pair for that aperture, though certainly not near the limit. The seeing
that night was good, about 7 out of 10. I'd expect any good 100mm 'scope to show the
pair at present.

I observed Porrima tonight.
I saw very similar to the Questar photo with 80mm f/7.5 refractor around 210x (Tak LE 5

With 130mm f/7 refractor and binoviwer (ZAO-II 16mm with 4x Barlow, ~220x), it was
split when seeing settled.
Earlier night (20:30 PDT-ish), seeing was excellent. I could push to 350x to observe Saturn
with 130mm f/7 but Porrima was too low in the sky. I waited for an hour but seeing wasn't
improving so I called it quit and back to work...

Last night at our club's twice monthly in town public star party I had a nice clean split of
Porrima. There was dark space between the Airy discs. I was using my AP 155mm f/7 EDF
APO with a 5.2mm Pentax SMC-XL and a TV 2x Barlow giving about 417x. This was around

Other objects we looked at in my scope, Saturn, The Clown Nebula, M3, M51, and M104.

I observed Porrima early this morning (around 1-1:30 EDT) and could only see an elongation,
at best. I was using a 9" SCT and Super Moncentrics pushing the magnifications between
186x, 297x and 425x. Seeing was about a 3/5 (very transparent, but unstable) and with
temperatures falling all night from the upper 60s into the upper 40s the SCT never settled
down with rolling currents visible as I would defocus. Disappointed as I've tried it with this
scope twice this week but poor results. I suppose conditions have not presented well enough
to expect more. The hunt is fun, but it'd be nice to split it in this scope as I know the aperture
is sufficient.

Porrima Pursuit (ポリマを追跡)[Re: leexeen] leexeen

Hi PJ,
Nice split! I had a Zeiss AS 80/840. Is that the scope you used? In may 2008 I could not
see anything but a round airydisk in my 70 f/8 fluorite, even at 280x. at that time I saw
it tightly split in the 102 f/8.8 fluorite at 220x. Inspired by your post, I will try with
the 70mm again asap and report back her.
Clear and stable skies,
Erik

Erik,

Thank you. The scope I used was Zeiss ED80/840 (Presto) in a tube I made. Here is some pics
of the project:

I wish you success in your attempt. The Vixen fluorites are superb scopes. If it can be split
with a 70mm, I'm sure that scope can do it.

Re: Porrima Pursuit [Re: PJ Anway] Erik Bakker
Hi PJ,

That is a stunning scope! Thanks for the link, I enjoyed that and brings back fond memories of
my AS 80/840. I too have a Zeiss TM, wich I use to equatorially mount the 70 and 102 fluorites
on. I found the original Zeiss 80 AS tube very heavy, almost in the same weight/bulk as the
102 fluorite. The 70mm fluorite on the other hand is almost tiny compared to the AS 80/840.
When mounted on the TM, the 70mm is very stable up to redicolous powers. I get the feel your
tube is also lighter then the original, so I bet it is a great combo with the TM. And yes, I will
take up on your encouragement to try and split Porrima withe the 70 fluorite. Maybe this week-
end brings the right conditions for a serious attempt.

Kind regards,

Erik

Re: Porrima Pursuit with the 70mm f/8 fluorite [Re: PJ Anway]
Hi PJ,
Just came in from observing Porrima under superb conditions with the 70mm f/8 fluorite. First
in the 4.8 Nagler for 117x. Already some slight elongation could be seen. In went the 2.1x Astro-
Physics barlow for 245x. Now I saw a clearly elongated double star with the slightest peanut
notching at the moments of best seeing! Right now the C102F is outside cooling down to see huw
much further it can split Porrima. I will report back in an hour or so. Porrima is definetly
widening fast, for last year in may I could not split porrima at all in the 70mm, it then was just
a round Airydisk.
Clear skies,
Erik

(余談)ポリマとは?Wikipediaを調べてみました;
Gamma Virginis has the traditional names Porrima and Arich.
    (乙女座ガンマは伝統的な名前であるポリマおよびアーチを持っている)
    とあります。
    伝統的な名前とは、ローマ神話に由来していることで下記の説明になっています;
「In Roman mythology, Porrima (or Prorsa or Antevorta) was the goddess of
the future and one of the two Carmentes (along with the goddess Postverta).
During childbirth, prayers were offered to summon the Carmentes to preside
over the labor. Porrima was said to be present at the birth when the baby was
born head-first; Postverta, when the feet of the baby came first.
Carmenta:In Roman mythology, Carmenta was the goddess of childbirth
and prophecy, associated with technological innovation as well as the
protection of mothers and children, and a patron of midwives. She was
the mother of Evander. Her name is derived from carmen, meaning a magic
spell, oracle or song, and is also the roots of the word charm. Carmenta
was said to have invented the Latin alphabet.
It was forbidden to wear leather or other forms of dead skin in her temple,
which was next to the Porta Carmentalis in Rome.
Her festival, called the Carmentalia, was celebrated primarily by women
on January 11 and January 15.

    Comet Lulinの印象が書かれていました;
・Slightly fuzzy patch, bright nucleus, and slight blue color.

・bright, star like nucleus with a wispy cloud surrounding it.
(2)ソフトウェア関係で最近読んだ面白い記事を紹介します;
Shari Lawrence Pfleeger女史の「Albert Einstein and Empirical Software
 Engineering」IEEE Computer October1999

 Shari Lawrence Pfleeger
「Soup or Art? The Role of Evidential Force in Empirical Software Engineering」
 ここで、Soup or Art?
Is this soup or is it art?"
(Lily Tomlinのone-woman show; The Serch for Signs of Intelligence Life in
  the Universe)
 science or art?。

先日入手した本について簡単に紹介します;
(1)Hidden Treasures
Hidden Treasures番号から;
・Hidden Treasure 36:NGC2169(オリオン座の散開星団,Little Pleades)
(2)Herchel 400 Observing Guide
Cambridge)
